David Clifford NOWELL DFM
David Clifford Nowell was the Flight Engineer on Halifax MkIII LW696/MP-X. It departed RAF Holme on Spalding Moor on 30th March 1944 at 22:10 on a mission to Nurnberg. LW696 was shot down by a Me110 night fighter piloted by Oblt Martin Becker of I./NJG 6, crashing near Daubhausen. of the 8 crew only Guy Edwards survived.
The raid of 30th/31st resulted in the highest number of aircrew casualties during a single raid by Bomber Command during WWII. Of 779 aircraft 105 didn't return with the loss of 534 crew a further 157 were captured and taken prisoner.
